Kwedizinga Village Water, Hygiene, and Sanitation Project – MKUMBURU Area Program
Kwedizinga village, located in Handeni District, Tanga Region, faces significant challenges in accessing clean water, with the community relying on seasonal ponds for water. This lack of a reliable water source has led to waterborne diseases like diarrhea and typhoid, and has increased the burden on women, who walk over 2 km daily to collect water.
This project in partnership with ABSA Bank aimed to improve access to potable water, hygiene, and sanitation by drilling a borehole, installing a solar-powered water pumping system, building a storage tank, and creating a water distribution network. This brings water within 400 meters of every household in Kwedizinga, benefiting 3,890 people, including 2,139 children. The project also focused on community mobilization and training, particularly for water user committees, to ensure sustainability.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and Tanzania's Water Sector Development Program. It contributes to improved child well-being, reduced waterborne diseases, and enhanced economic opportunities by freeing up time previously spent fetching water.
Key activities included a groundwater survey, borehole drilling, water treatment and storage infrastructure, and community sensitization on hygiene and sanitation. The project was designed to support not only access to water but also the long-term sustainability of water resources through community involvement and training in water management.
By improving water access, the project contributes to better health, nutrition, and educational outcomes for children, and provide a foundation for improved livelihoods and community development in Kwedizinga.
